What Causes Midlife Stress?

In 1957, Elliott Jaques, the Canadian psychoanalyst, social scientist, and management consultant, introduced a new expression – “mid-life crisis.”‘ This term describes a transition of identity and self-confidence that can occur in middle-aged individuals.

The existence of a mid-life crisis milestone isn’t totally in consensus. In the 80s, many doubted the existence of a crisis as being a standard phenomenon but claimed that when most humans reach their mid-life, many major issues in an individual’s life approach crucial intersections, and these issues unravel as stress- “mid-life stressors.”

Whether the years surrounding middle age are vulnerable to unique stress or are overtaken by a feeling of crisis, it is expected to question what triggers these feelings.

The future promises a decline in health and physical abilities, and the seldom variable is the rate of deterioration.

    This recognition can flare up like an hourglass phenomenon. While looking up with fright at the wearisome diminishing grains of sand, one is reminded that mortality is inescapable and oncoming closer and closer. A glimpse down to the bottom of the hourglass can also present a discouraging fate by creating a reorganization that so much sand already has trickled down through the tight middle but only an unsatisfying bundle of accomplishments can be accounted for, in comparison to all the wasted time.
  2. The other direction that might cause a depleting state of mind among middle-aged men and women is the “side effect,” meaning looking aside left and right, examining the accomplishments of colleagues, friends, neighbors, etc., and holding a comparison between the achievements of others and their half-empty glass. This situation can also unravel from unmet assumed social expectations. Feel that all eyes are staring at the unsuccessful individuals who failed to live up to the fulfillment of the desired “dream life.” Assuming that at this stage of life, it is inevitable to be awarded the badge of “failed,” it is too late for corrections.

The first approach is a reaction to internal worries, thoughts, and beliefs that unravel in one’s mind, independently of their surroundings and other human beings, whereas the second approach is created from external pressure. This distinction is a starting point to try and understand what tool-set can help to improve the quality of life when reaching middle age and what options should be provided so as to assure the years of middle age be lived at their prime.
